RV Tips for Staying Prepared, Safe, & Dry in Bad Weather

Spring is right around the corner! As you start planning your spring camping trips in your new or used RV, you’ll want to stay mindful of the potential for changing forecasts as the season shifts. Don’t let unpredictable spring rains, thunderstorms, and high winds wreak havoc on your camping trip. Check out our RV tips for staying prepared, dry, and safe during bad weather.

RV Tips

Expect the Unexpected

Even if you look ahead and don’t see a drop of rain in the 7-10 day forecast, Oklahoma weather has a mind of its own! Plan for rain anyway. Make sure to include rain jackets, umbrellas, and ponchos in your camping gear, extra changes of clothing for everyone in the family, and lots of extra socks. If there’s one good thing about being caught in an unexpected downpour, it’s knowing you have something warm and dry to change into once you get back to the RV.

The Indoor Plan B

We get it: when you’re planning a camping trip, you’re more than likely counting on a lot of outdoor fun like bike rides, hiking, or kayaking. Keep a contingency plan in your back pocket. When you’re making your campground reservations, scout around for local attractions like an indoor climbing gym, aquarium, or jump park. In the event you can’t head outside for fun, there’s no reason why you can’t have your fun indoors. If you don’t really want to leave your RV, make the executive decision to have a family movie or game night in the living room with the fireplace kicked on. Keep some fun rainy day snacks on hand that you pull out for the occasion!

RV Tips

Safety & Weather Preparedness

The above tips can help you pivot and maintain a good attitude even if a storm rolls in, but let’s talk safety. In the event of bad weather, remember that you set the tone for your family and there are a few easy ways you can keep everyone calm and safe.

First, model the peace of mind you’d like your kids to feel, even if you feel anxious yourself. Pack an emergency kit in your new or used RV that’s easily accessible. This kit should include the following:

  • NOAA weather radio (make sure to get one that has multiple charging options and ports)
  • Flashlights
  • Extra batteries
  • First aid kit

It’s also a good idea to locate the recommended storm shelter at your campground once you check in, just in the event that you need to relocate to a safer spot (and to make that easy, we recommend choosing a campsite relatively nearby). To give yourself an extra boost of preparedness, ask us about any off-grid packages we can update or add to your RV – like solar panels – that can help maintain power even if there’s an outage.
